DAY 5 – APRIL 22nd 2000
PRASZKA, POLAND – MORNING
ROUND 08
[LED and NASCAR exchange initiative again]
LED, his M1911A1 pistol ready, aims at ENEMY 4 (fast action) and fires (slow action).
LED’S ROLL [click to expand]
LED is in close combat with a pistol and suffers a -1 penalty on his roll. He rolls no ammo dice (he’s firing a single shot).
LED rolls:
- RANGED COMBAT [D8+D8] = 1 SUCCESS (rolled 6 and 4)
He decides to push the roll:
- RANGED COMBAT [D8] = 2 SUCCESSES (rolled a 7 on the re-rolled die)
- Hit Location Die = TORSO
Good thing he has pushed: LED deals 2 base damage + 1 for the extra success = 3 damage points. ENEMY 4 has a flak jacket protecting his torso with armor 1 and LED pistol’s modifier increases the armor level to 2, therefore 2 points of damage are absorbed and 1 goes through.
ENEMY 4 is hit and falls to the ground suppressed, LED fires a single round.
ENEMY 4’s flak jacket has been penetrated, so there’s a 1 in 6 chance it’s no longer an effective protection:
Roll [D6] = 2 The flak jacket is still effective.
LED strikes the enemy center mass and sees him go down to the floor.
ALEX renews his attack on the now defenseless ENEMY 4. Since his opponent is wearing armor on his torso and head, ALEX goes for the legs.
ALEX’S ROLL [click to expand]
ENEMY 4 is prone and suppressed so ALEX gets a +3 to his attack with a knife, he’s performing an aimed blow so he gets a -2. ENEMY 4 won’t be able to block it as he’s lost both actions for the round.
ALEX rolls:
- CLOSE COMBAT [D10+D10] = 2 SUCCESSES (rolled 10 and 3)
ALEX succeeds in hitting ENEMY 4’s legs. There’s no armor, so the knife deals 2 base damage points +1 for the extra success for a total of 3 damage points, which is critical for a knife. ENEMY 4 is killed in the attack.
He stabs his opponent repeatedly in his thigh until he stops moving and a pool of blood has formed.
On the upper floor, ENEMY 3 gets up (fast action) and moves for the stairs as the battle is getting fiercer in the main building.
NASCAR moves down the stairs, past the first windows where he sees LED and ALEX have the situation under control (fast action), and inside the second classroom (slow action).
DONNA follows NASCAR inside (fast action) and reloads (slow action).
An explosion can be heard coming from the main building, just down the corridor, quickly followed by a second detonation.
End of Round 08
ROUND 09
LED moves to the classroom door and peeks in the corridor. He sees NASCAR coming out of the next door, they exchange a hand gesture and LED remains in cover. The end of the corridor is full of debris that have clearly been pushed there, and the first door leading to the outside on the East side has been blocked using part of the metal frame of an old school desk.
ALEX reloads his AKM (slow action) and moves to the door next to LED (fast action).
Gunfire and shouting are echoing in the corridor, coming from the main building.
ENEMY 3 is not in sight.
WITH the EYES of the REFEREE [click to expand]
The players don’t know it, but ENEMY 3 has taken position on top of the stairs leading down to the main hall and is firing on the militia’s assault team.
NASCAR makes sure DONNA is okay, then moves carefully out of the door into the corridor (fast action). He sees LED peeking out of the last classroom and raises his hand to signal his presence. LED raises his blood-stained left hand in response.
The corridor’s ceiling panels have partially collapsed and there’s desks wooden tops and metal frame pushed to one side along with empty crates, chairs, and stacks of old books. NASCAR goes prone (free action) looking down the corridor.
The North wing is partially sunken in the ground, so the corridor ends with a short ramp of stairs leading up to ground level. There’s a heavy smell of spent rounds in the air.
DONNA moves to the classroom’s door and remains inside, her rifle trained on the windows.
THE ASSAULT ON THE MAIN BUILDING [click to expand]
By the end of Round 03 the assault team had reached the outside of the school. The side office they were targeting was empty (I judged it too exposed for the enemies to take position in it).
By the end of Round 04 half of the assault team was in. The enemies had tried to block the office door, but have done a poor job with it (it’s an old wooden door, probably partially broken. Also, it opens on the inside, so they couldn’t just pin a chair against it).
By the end of Round 05 the assault team is entirely in the school and the first members have already managed to open the door.
In Round 06 the firefight begins: there’s 2 enemies targeting the office door, with a third enemy on his way after making sure there’s no more assailants coming from the South. MARKO has instructed his men to get out of the office and in cover as fast as possible, in an effort not to get the entire assault team pinned down in the door’s bottleneck. This is the most critical part of the assault and likely the Round where the risk of getting wounded or killed is higher.
In Round 07 about half of the assault team has moved out of the office and is now trading fire with the enemy in the main hall.
In Round 08 the enemies have decided to make use of the grenades they found in the school’s arsenal. Most of the assault team is suppressed, some are wounded, but they maintain pressure on the enemies.
By Round 09 the enemy Leader has taken cover in one of the bathrooms where the 2 remaining hostages are kept; one of the enemy fighters has been wounded and has moved upstairs above the main entrance, where he is forced to stay prone due to the fire coming from the other side of the street, courtesy of the support team.
The third Flock’s Polish fighter has been killed in the East corridor. ENEMY 3 is now trading fire with the assault team from opposite ends of the stairs connecting the main hall and the upper floor of the North wing.
End of Round 09
ROUND 10
[It’s just the players acting in this round, so I won’t follow the initiative order]
LED nods towards the corridor and he and ALEX start moving. LED takes a knee next to NASCAR and checks DONNA inside the classroom. “You guys good?” he asks.
“Yes sir” says NASCAR, his M249 trained on the stairs.
“I’m good” nods rapidly DONNA, her adrenaline still high after the fight.
LED turns to ALEX “you and DOC check the next room” he then taps NASCAR’s shoulder with the butt of his pistol “you’re with me”
They move along the corridor, ALEX and DONNA enter the last room on the right and find nobody in it.
LED and NASCAR carefully move up the stairs until LED (who’s in front) spots someone peeking from behind a stack of wooden crates.
RECON ROLL [click to expand]
LED has just spotted one of MARKO’s soldiers. I rolled RECON for both LED and the soldier to see if they recognize each other as friendly.
– LED rolls RECON [D10+D8] = 1 SUCCESS (rolled 6 and 1)
– PRASZKA’s soldier rolls RECON [D8+D8] = 2 SUCCESSES (rolled 6 and 8)
Friendly fire avoided.
LED recognizes one of MARKO’s soldiers. He raises his left hand and the soldier raises his in response.
On the right, at the bottom of the staircase is another PRASZKA’s soldiers lying on the floor dead, and right behind him another soldier trading fire with someone up the stairs.
MILITIA’S ROLL [click to expand]
The PRASZKA’s soldier is firing at ENEMY 3 at short distance (he’s slightly above 10m) and rolls 2 ammo dice. ENEMY 3 is standing away from the stairs’ landing and only his head and arms are out of cover.
PRASZKA’s soldier rolls:
- RANGED COMBAT [D8+D8] = 0 SUCCESSES
- Ammo dice [D6+D6] = 2 + 2
- Hit Location Die = HEAD
The local soldier fires 4 rounds but doesn’t hit.
At the beginning of the corridor departing left is another local soldier aiming his AKM at something down the passage. Finally, past him is one final soldier who’s taken cover at the beginning of the southern corridor.
End of Round 10
ROUND 11
LED tells ALEX and DONNA to stay on the stairs while he and NASCAR move up to the stacked crates.
The PRASZKA’s soldier signals something behind him, then moves to cover the East corridor.
Once they’ve moved, LED and NASCAR can see MARKO firing up a ramp of stairs leading to the upper floor above the main entrance.
ENEMY 3 returns fire from the upper floor, aiming at one of the Praszka’s soldiers.
ENEMY 3’S ROLL [click to expand]
ENEMY 3 is firing at short range (he’s just above close quarters distance) and from an elevated position (+1); he’s low on ammo so he only rolls 1 ammo dice.
ENEMY 3 rolls:
- RANGED COMBAT [D10+D10] = 2 SUCCESSES
- Ammo die [D6] = 1
- Hit Location Die = ARMS
His target is behind partial cover, but has his arms exposed. ENEMY 3 deals 2 base damage points + 1 for the extra success = 3 damage points. The militia’s soldier suffers a critical hit and is killed as a result.
ENEMY 3 rolled a 1 on his ammo dice so he has to reload (last mag).
The assault team’s soldier at the bottom of the stairs his hit with a single shot under his armpit and collapses to the floor.
End of Round 11
ROUND 12
LED peeks out of the stack, aims for ENEMY’s 3 head (fast action) and fires a single round (slow action).
LED’S ROLL [click to expand]
LED is firing at ENEMY 3 in close quarters (-1 for pistols) with a called shot (-2) aiming for the head. He’s also not rolling any ammo dice (fires a single shot). Because of the angle, ENEMY 3 is in full cover except for his head.
LED rolls:
- RANGED COMBAT [D6+D6] = 0 SUCCESSES (rolled 3 and 1)
He won’t push the roll. LED fires a single shot but misses.
His shot misses and hits the support structure of the stairs.
On the other side of the stack of crates, NASCAR raises his M249 setting it on a crate (fast action) and fires a small burst (slow action).
NASCAR’S ROLL [click to expand]
NASCAR is firing in close quarters (he’s right on the line, but I’ll count him as within 10m) with a machinegun granting him a -2. He rolls 2 ammo dice.
NASCAR rolls:
- HEAVY WEAPONS [D8+D8] = 1 SUCCESS (rolled 2 and 8)
- Ammo dice [D6+D6] = 3 + 6
- Hit Location Die = HEAD (rolled after deciding not to push the attack roll)
NASCAR gets lucky: he hits ENEMY 3 in the head (not in cover) for 2 base damage points + 1 for the 6 rolled on the ammo dice for a total of 3 damage points. ENEMY 3 is wearing a steel helmet that absorbs 1 damage, so he suffers 2. He drops to 0 hit points and (he’s an NPC) is killed in the attack.
NASCAR fires 3+6 = 9 rounds, he has 96 left in him current ammo belt.
For the sake of applying all the rules: ENEMY 3’s helmet armor has been penetrated, so there’s a 1 in 6 chance his armor level drops by 1.
Roll[D6] = 3 -> the helmet is still effective.
Blood sprays from ENEMY 3’s head staining the greyish ceiling as he drops to the ground dead.
“Got him!” shouts NASCAR (free action).
ALEX and DONNA carefully enter the main hall.
MARKO and another soldier are still engaging the enemy on the upper floor over the entrance.
End of Round 12
