About a year and a half ago my ongoing quest for finding stories set in the Twilight: 2000 universe landed me on a blog called mindlands.
There I found the author’s posts detailing his TW2K solo campaign, using the 4th edition of the game by Free League. It is a relatively short, but entertaining and well-organized campaign that follows a group of US soldiers in the aftermath of the battle of Kalisz.
I especially appreciated the attention that was paid in ensuring a progressive experience, with rules and mechanics not applied in bulk, but rather introduced in a paced fashion, sometimes through the clever use of an NPC. Despite it being a solo campaign, I can see it fitting for a group of new players sitting around a table, so if that’s your case, you might want to take notes.
This was my main takeaway from this particular campaign: I myself tried to start with the basics of travel, navigation and survival, and only then moved to firefights and larger events the players had to deal with. This broadens both the number of game mechanics with which one can manage specific situations, and the scope and breath of the unfolding events.
Mindlands’ TW2K campaign is a recommended read, but the blog’s content doesn’t end there. There are posts about different Free League’s game, a full D&D section, links to other online resources in the realm of RPGs and much more. Also, a short adventure played in The One Ring RPG (also by Free League) which I really enjoyed, and more adventures in Middle Earth.
As I mentioned, this TW2K campaign is interesting but short, and leaves you with a cliffhanger rich in potential. So, if you read it, tell the author you’d like to know what’s next. I sure would.
